Winter is in full swing and this icy weather makes for dry flaky itchy skin and lips. My lips are not in the greatest condition at the moment, thanks to the colder weather. They are dry and cracked and I’m avoiding matte lipsticks like the plague.
I have four go-to lip products at the moment, which treat and moisturize my dry lips. I mostly saturate my lips with these products at night and sleep with the treatments on my lips with the hope that they’ll feel softer and smoother come morning.
These are my go-to products:
- Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream: R299 at Woolworths
- Blistex DCT: Deep Conditioning Treatment: R69.95 at Dischem
- Oh Liefs Tummy Wax: R124.95 at Clicks
- Catrice Lip Treatment: R80 at Takealot/Dischem
Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream contains lanolin. It’s the same ingredient that is used in nipple cream for dry, itchy and cracked nipples that form during breastfeeding. Lanolin is a waxy substance that works as a barrier repair for the skin. It is known to reduce the signs and symptoms of dryness and scaling, cracks and abrasions, and pain and itchiness. I’ve been using this cream for my dry and itch pregnancy boobs and it works like a charm on my lips as well. And most other dry patches on my face. My husband suffers from eczema on his face and I dabbed some of this cream onto his dry patches and they all healed up by sunrise. This is definitely a winner in my books.
DCT: Daily Conditioning Treatment is part of the Blistex Range of lip products. It contains Cocoa Butter, Aloe and Vitamin E that aids in moisturizing the lips. It also has an SPF20 factor which is a great protective treatment from the sun. DCT helps to prevent and replenish moisture-starved cells that can occur from daily exposure to dry air and other environmental conditions. This little magic tub sits on my dressing table and I reach for it often just before bedtime.
‘Oh Liefs’ Tummy Wax:
Yes, I know! While this is advertised and well known for its effective prevention of stretch marks, it also helps with dry and itchy skin and therefore it helps with dry lips and soothes cracked and chapped lips. It works as a natural moisturizer and contains Beeswax, a soothing wax which promotes skin elasticity. The ingredients are as follows: Olea Europaea (Cold pressed extra virgin Olive) Oil*, Cocos Nucifera (Virgin Coconut) Fruit Oil*, Adansonia Digitata (Boabab) Seed Oil*, Cera Alba (Beeswax) – 89% organic of total and 100% natural of the total.
Catrice Lip Treatment:
This is a rich lip balm made of shea butter which has the most amazing and fresh citrus smell. I keep this one in my handbag and pop it on my lips when I’m on the go. It provides my lips with intense moisture and works incredibly well as a lipstick base.
For even smoother lips, it would be a good idea to exfoliate your lips before you place these treatments on them. I have made my own lip scrub and it’s delicious and totally edible. A quick light scrub on the lips, lick it off and you’re good to go.
4 tsp brown sugar
1 x tsp coconut oil
1 x tsp vanilla essence
1 x drop of food colouring (not necessary)
So here’s to smooth and gorgeous lips this winter season!
